FADE IN:
1 EXT. THE SKY -- NIGHT 1
Darkness.
The universe.
The Milky Way spreads across the night sky like foam.
A shooting star appears. It slashes toward the horizon.

2 EXT. SKY ABOVE THE EARTH -- STREAKING DOWNWARD – NIGHT 2
POV METEOR
Raging fire races downward toward the jet-black earth.

3 EXT. CALIFORNIA DESERT -- NIGHT 3

Rap music is heard coming from a radio.
Two, young African-American army personnel are sitting in a
jeep listening to the sounds and drinking their favorite
brew.

They're Specialists 4th Class TUTTLE and BUBECK. Their jeep
is on a hill in the middle of nowhere.

ANGLE BEHIND THEM
Several miles away are the lights of a small military compound.

TUTTLE

(yelling into the
darkness)

THIS PLACE SUCKS. IT SUCKS, MAN.
I AM GOIN' CRAP-FACED OUT OF MY MIND.
AND I GOT FOUR MORE WEEKS HERE.

Tuttle takes a long drink. Bubeck stays in the music
with his eyes closed, ignoring him.

Suddenly, Tuttle sees a streak of fire leave the sky and
come to earth beyond a nearby hill.

TUTTLE (CONT'D)

Hey! Hey, Bubeck, you see that?

He pokes his friend.

BUBECK

Huh?

TUTTLE

A shooting star. It landed right
over there.

BUBECK

You really are crap-faced.

TUTTLE

No, it's true. I just saw it. We
gotta check it out.

Tuttle starts the engine and they race away.

4 EXT. DESERT IMPACT AREA -- MOMENTS LATER 4

The jeep roars around the side of the hill. In front of
them is a patch of earth where the desert grass is burning.

The guys jump out and stare at it.

At the center of the burning patch is a brightly glowing
rock a little larger than a grapefruit. Tuttle begins
stomping out the fire.

TUTTLE

Throw the beer on it.

BUBECK

NO WAY.

TUTTLE

There's water in the jug.

Bubeck stumbles back to the jeep and pulls out a large,
military issue water jug. Suddenly, a voice screams from
the darkness.

SMICKERS (V.O.)

HEY, GET AWAY FROM THERE. GO AWAY.

BUBECK

Huh?

SMICKERS (O.S.)

YOU HEARD WHAT I SAID, GET AWAY.

Out of the darkness walks a young desert rat named B.B.
SMICKERS. He's 23 but looks 29. Clearly, he's more than a
little nuts. When he isn't yelling, he mumbles to himself.

TUTTLE

Aw, it's just that wacko who lives

SMICKERS

I SAID, DON'T TOUCH IT AND THAT MEANS
DON'T TOUCH IT.

BUBECK

Look, man, we don't want no trouble.
We got here first and it's ours.
So, Just stay back.

Smickers circles the fire like a desert animal, glaring at
them.

SMICKERS

YOU CAN'T OWN A STAR. THE STARS
WILL FALL FROM THE HEAVENS AND THE
MOON WILL TURN TO BLOOD. THAT'S
WHATIS GONNA HAPPEN AT THE END. AND
THIS IS THE END.

TUTTLE

Hey, if you say so.

SMICKERS

IT'S A STAR GOD SENT TO WARN US.

Bubeck pours water on the glowing stone. It sizzles and
steam rises.

SMICKERS (CONT'D)

AND HIS RETURN SHALL BE LIKE LIGHTNING
GOING FROM EAST TO WEST.

TUTTLE

Look, just shut up and get out of
here, all right?

Bubeck reaches down and picks up the rock. He juggles it
like a hot potato.

BUBECK

Damn, this thing is hot.

SMICKERS

LEAVE HIS STAR ALONE.

Smickers rushes forward. But Tuttle pops him in the nose
and he goes straight back onto his butt.

TUTTLE

I DIDN'T WANT TO DO THAT.

THE HELL AWAY.

Smickers sits in the dirt holding his bleeding nose.

SMICKERS

It's given unto man once to die, and
after that the judgement. All
unbelievers will be judged.

TUTTLE

Yeah, well, you go find those
unbelievers and give’em the word.

SMICKERS

IF YOU STEAL HIS STAR, HE WILL JUDGE
YOU. YOU CAN'T OWN A SIGN OF THE
END...

BUBECK

Just watch us.

The guys back away, get in their jeep and drive off, leaving
Smickers holding his nose, ranting after them.

SMICKERS

I AM A PROPHET, THE VOICE OF ONE
CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS. AND
PROPHETS ARE SICK OF GETTING HIT IN
THE NOSE.

5 EXT. ARMY CHEMICAL WARFARE STORAGE DEPOT - NIGHT 5

Tuttle and Bubeck pull up to a gate in a chain-link fence
that's covered with razor wire. Beyond is a large, one-story
cement structure with no windows. An MP in desert fatigues,
opens the gate and waves them through.

6 INT. CHEMICAL WEAPONS DEPORT BUNK AREA -- NIGHT 6

Tuttle and Bubeck walk into their bunk area. The meteorite
is tucked under Tuttle's jacket. When they're alone, Tuttle
pulls it out.

BUBECK

I heard of a guy who had a rock fall
through his roof and thought it was
from outer space, but it was just
frozen crap from a 747.

They begin examining the rock.

TUTTLE

Does this look like frozen crap to
you?

BUBECK

No.
(beat)
You think it's worth anything?

TUTTLE

Hell, yes.

BUBECK

You mean ... we could sell it?

TUTTLE

I saw on TV where a scientist bought
a meteorite for five thousand bucks.

BUBECK

OH, MAN...
(beat)
Hey, what's that on the side?

CU STONE
Most of the stone is jagged, but part of it looks as though
it had been worked with some kind of tool. On it is a small,
strange mark that could almost be a symbol.

BUBECK
(CONT'D)
This couldn't be from outer space.
Somebody's carved on it.

Tuttle examines it. The symbol is not much more than an
ugly scratch.

TUTTLE

It's nothin'.

BUBECK

Maybe it got dropped out of the space shuttle.

TUTTLE

They don't drop rocks out of the
shuttle, man.

BUBECK

They drop lots of stuff out of the
shuttle.

TUTTLE

Not rocks.

He starts hitting it against the wall.

TUTTLE

Come on, you're gonna break it.

BUBECK

I want to see what's inside.

TUTTLE

There's nothin' inside. It's a rock.
You break it and we won't get five
thousand bucks.

He grabs it away from him.

TUTTLE
(CONT'D)
Look, we got early duty. We'll check
this out tomorrow when we've got
better light.

He sets the rock on a dresser.

7 INT. CWD BUNK AREA -- LATER 7

Tuttle and Bubeck are asleep in their racks. Tuttle is on
the top bunk.

Suddenly, in the darkness, there is the sound of dripping.
One drop. Then, another... and another...

CU ROCK ON DRESSER

A tiny hole is in the side of the rock... and it's “bleeding.”
Red drops that look like blood fall on the dresser forming a
pool.

A pool is forming on the dresser.

ACT ONE

FADE IN:

9 INT. DARK CORRIDOR -- NIGHT 9

Strange sounds. Echoing footsteps.

An old man walks down a dark corridor. He's wearing the
clothes of a mental patient.

A door opens. He hesitates...then, goes in.

10 INT. ROOM OF THE EYES -- CONTINUOUS 10

He enters a room. NO walls are visible. The man has been
here before and he is frightened.

In the past, he has been known as the Chairman and before
that, Dr. Wilson Pride. But from now on, he will be known
as DR. MERICK.

In front of him, under a pool of light, sits a straight-back
chair. It faces a tall sheet of black glass in a steel frame.

A woman's voice speaks with quiet authority. This is the
VOICE OF THE DAWN.

VOICE OF THE DAWN

Please sit down.

The man obeys. He stares at the glass.

POV MERICK

In it appear a dozen sets of living eyes.

In the center--much larger than all the rest--is the symbol
of the Dawn with the empty eyes of the child.

VOICE OF THE DAWN
(CONT'D)
The final review of your case has
been completed.

The man's fear increases.

VOICE OF THE DAWN

Your record of service has been noted.

Suddenly, the eyes on the glass vanish and on it appears a
huge image of the old man as Dr. Wilson Pride, dead, slumped
over his desk in a pool of blood with a gun in his hand.

DR. MERICK

Is that ... the verdict?

VOICE OF THE DAWN

Turn around.

He turns. Behind him on the floor is a briefcase.

VOICE OF THE DAWN (CONT'D)

Pick it up-

He picks it up. He is even more terrified. Sweat drips
down his forehead.

VOICE OF THE DAWN (CONT'D)

Open it.

He does so. The first thing he sees inside is a gun.

DR. MERICK

(sweating)
What ... do you want me to do with
this?

VOICE OF THE DAWN

The verdict has been rendered. If
you fail again, your suicide will be
real. But for now, you have been
given a reprieve.

Tremendous relief floods over the man.

DR. MERICK

Thank you. I will not fail.

VOICE OF THE DAWN

Your identity has been cleansed.
Look in the briefcase.

12 INT. LAB CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY 12

MARCASE, SHIROMA, HAILEY and CASSIAN are gathered in the lab
conference room.

CU MONITOR

The satellite photo is on a monitor. It zeroes in on the
western United States. Then, to California.

CASSIAN

Twenty-seven hours and thirteen
minutes ago, all contact was lost
with Army Chemical Weapons Depot
number 114, located at this point in
the California desert.

The computer map zeroes in even closer. A picture of the
facility appears on the screen.

CASSIAN (CONT'D)

From that time, there has been no
contact with anyone inside and no
equipment in the facility has
functioned. This includes
surveillance cameras and sensors.

HAILEY

What about satellite scans of the
building?

CASSIAN

They're blurry. We don't know why.
(beat)

underground. It's maintained by a
rotating staff of ten personnel...

stored in there?

CASSIAN

Maybe a dab of VX...

MARCASE

In other words, enough to destroy
the entire human race.

CASSIAN

The facility is old. Everything in
it is on the list for disposal.
Unfortunately, the money for disposal
ran out in 1993.

SHIROMA

Has anybody tried to enter the
building since the equipment shut
down?

CASSIAN

Sixteen hours ago an army hazmat
team went in. Of course, with full
protective gear. Twenty minutes
into the operation, all contact with
them was lost and they haven't been
heard from since.

MARCASE

So, guess who the White House wants
to send in next?

SHIROMA

Probably a team that's young,
expendable and stupid.

HAILEY

Sounds like a job for us.

CASSIAN

Our C130 is waiting.

13 INT. BOARDROOM OF THE DAWN - DAY 13

The ten board members of the Washington cell of the Dawn are

in an expensive suit. He sits down in the head chair.

DR. MERICK

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
My sincere thanks for coming on such
short notice. I am Dr. Carl Merick
and I have been assigned as your new
hemispheric director. Please open
the envelope in front of you.

The board members open the manila envelopes.

DR. MERICK
(CONT'D)
As usual, when a new director is
assigned, the resignation of all
board members must be submitted. Of
course, this is only a formality.
As soon as you have signed and
submitted your resignations, I will
reconvene the board under my
leadership.

The board members begin hurriedly signing the paper that was
in the envelope.

DR. MERICK
(CONT'D)
When you're finished, insert the
document into the smaller envelope,
seal it and pass it to me.

The board members place their resignations into the envelopes,
lick the flaps, seal them and pass them to Merick. When he
has them all, he smiles.

DR. MERICK
(CONT'D)
You'll be interested to know that
three of you will not be reinstated.
For those three, the glue in your
envelope contained a nerve agent.
Your term of service has come to an end.

One by one, three of the board members begin trembling,
then slump over with their lips coated in blood. When the last
one is gone, Merick smiles at the remaining group.

DR. MERICK
(CONT'D)
So much for old business. The board
of the western hemisphere is now
reconvened. Dr. Chapman, please
inform us of new business.

A sweating DR. CHAPMAN stands up.

happening at a chemical warfare depot
in California. We are sending a
representative to the site.

DR. MERICK

assignment. My representative is
already there.

14 EXT. DESERT AIR BASE (STOCK) 14

A C130 lands.

15 EXT. CHEMICAL WEAPONS 15

The lab van pulls up in front of the gate leading into the
chemical weapons depot. Military vehicles are parked,
blocking the road. The lab van doors open. Marcase, Shiroma,
Hailey and Cassian get out. A young, female major walks up
and greets them. This is MAJOR KATE HARRIER. She's 29 years
old, and very beautiful with a lot of built-in attitude.
Especially at this moment. She isn't happy at all.

HARRIER

I assume one of you is Dr. Cassian?

CASSIAN

That's me.

HARRIER

I'm Major Harrier.

CASSIAN

I'd like for all of you to meet Major
Kate Harrier. She's been DOD hazmat
rep for this operation.

How many people did you send in?

HARRIER

Three.

SHIROMA

And how were they outfitted?

HARRIER

(bitterly)
The latest government issue bio-hazard
suits -- which, I'm sure, were not
as advanced as yours.

HAILEY

What about communications?

HARRIER

Radio contact was normal until they
went below ground.

HAILEY

What did they say before
communications were broken?

HARRIER

Nothing significant. They did measure
a slight increase in humidity.

MARCASE

So, they just went in and vanished.

HARRIER

That's the way it appears.

CASSIAN

be using the vector H-1 bio-hazard
suits.

Dr. Cassian, I insist on being part
of the initial team. This has been
my operation and it's my people who

CASSIAN

And precisely for that reason, Major,
I don't want you to go in. The
emotional stress could put us at
risk.

HARRIER

(coldly)
I am fully capable of controlling
emotional stress and operating in a
professional manner.

CASSIAN

I'm sure you're also capable of
obeying orders. I want you and Dr.
Marcase to conduct a survey of the
immediate area. Talk to anyone who
might have any useful information.

HARRIER

You must be joking. This is a desert.

MARCASE

What do you want us to do, Cassian,
interview the snakes?

CASSIAN

The decision is final. Let's get to
work.

Marcase and Harrier are less than happy.

17 EXT. JEEP ON DESERT ROAD -- A SHORT TIME LATER 17

Marcase and Harrier are driving down a desert road. There

They pull up to him.

SMICKERS

MARCASE

Exactly when did this happen?

SMICKERS

HARRIER

They were from the army depot?

SMICKERS

They had a jeep.

MARCASE

19 INT. CWD LEVEL ONE -- DAY 19

Hailey and Shiroma enter the top level of the chemical weapons
depot. They're wearing special bio-hazard suits with
reflective silver stripes and slightly tinted face masks.

Kimberly screams.

ACT TWO

26 INT. LAB VAN - DAY 26

Marcase, Cassian and Harrier are in the lab van. A really
heated argument is going on. Cassian looks especially shaken.

MARCASE

CASSIAN, WE ARE WASTING TIME. WE'VE
GOT TO GET IN THERE RIGHT NOW.

CASSIAN

And do what, vanish into a black
hole like the others?

HARRIER

There's got to be something we can
do--some kind of equipment you can
bring in.

CASSIAN

Whatever's down there causes
everything to stop functioning ... both
people and equipment.
(beat)
Look, I'm in contact with the White
House. Decisions are being made.

MARCASE

I know what that means.

HARRIER

What does it mean?

MARCASE

Project termination. This place
becomes ground zero.

HARRIER

That isn't going to happen to my
people, Dr. Cassian.

CASSIAN

Come over here and look at this.

He leads them to a monitor.

CASSIAN
(CONT'D)
Dr. Shiroma was carrying the latest
sampling equipment. Before it went
out, it made one last, split second
transmission.

He turns on the monitor.

CU MONITOR
On the screen appears an eerie group of organic circles linked
together as though in an endless chain. They seem to glow.

HARRIER

What's that?

CASSIAN

We have absolutely no idea. A drop
of it must have entered her scanning
equipment. It has the properties of
a liquid, but it's solid. It seems
to burn, yet it isn't consumed. And
there is an indication that it can
change forms.

MARCASE

It looks like an enzyme.

CASSIAN

That's what I thought too, but it
isn't. We've gone as far as we can
without an actual sample. This much
I can say, according to the computer,
nothing like it exists in the world.

Harrier and Marcase stare at each other.

MARCASE

Out in the desert we met a crazy guy
who told us that two nights ago,
some kind of meteorite landed not
far from here. He took us to the
place.

CASSIAN

Well, did you find anything?

HARRIER

He said two soldiers picked it up
right after it landed. He thinks
they brought it here.

Cassian looks at them for a moment, then picks up a telephone.

CASSIAN

Major, I want you to have all military
personnel ready to evacuate at a
moment's notice.

MARCASE

What are you doing?

27 INT. THE CHEMICAL WEAPONS ROOM -- DAY 27

Kimberly Shiroma lies on the floor.

CU HER FACE

Her face inside the helmet is covered by the thick, red
substance. It bubbles over her skin as though it's crawling.
She sucks in her breath.

DISSOLVE TO:
28 INT. CHAPEL -- NIGHT 28

Singing voices. Slowly, Kimberly awakens.
At first, she doesn't know where she is. Then, she
realizes ... and a look of shock and pain comes to her.

She is sitting alone in a small chapel. A casket surrounded
by candles is at the front. It's closed. On the lid is the
picture of a handsome, young man. It's ALLEN COVELL. Tears
fill her eyes.

SHIROMA

Oh, God, what is happening? This
can't be real. This is a dream.

She gets up and rushes to the door at the back. She tries
to open it, but it's locked. Then, she hears a quiet voice
calling to her.

ALLEN COVELL (O.S.)

Kim.

Slowly, she turns. Standing near the casket is ALLEN COVELL,
her fiance.

SHIROMA

I've got to wake up.

He walks toward her.

ALLEN COVELL

(gently)
Kim, You're afraid. Why are you
afraid?

He walks closer.

SHIROMA

ALLEN COVELL

You're so filled with anger and fear.
Is this what happened to our love?

He touches her hair. Suddenly, it's as though she's really with him again.

ALLEN COVELL (CONT'D)

Kim.

Tears run down her cheeks.

SHIROMA

You went away and never came back.
First my parents left me, then you.
I don't want to see you. I don't
want to dream about you. GO AWAY.

ALLEN COVELL

There's so much anger. And you're
so afraid, even of a beautiful memory.

SHIROMA

I must be ill. This is a delusion.
He backs away from her.

ALLEN COVELL

The intention was not to hurt you.

SHIROMA

That's a very strange thing to say.

ALLEN COVELL
Goodbye, Kimberly.

Slowly, the image of Allen begins to fade away.

SHIROMA

Wait. (beat)
Wait, come back. COME BACK.

Slowly, she walks toward the front and stares at the picture
on the casket.

30 EXT. CHEMICAL WEAPONS DEPOT - EVENING 30

Kate walks back from talking with military personnel. Marcase
meets her.

MARCASE

We've gotta talk.

He leads her behind one of the vehicles.

MARCASE
(CONT'D)
Look, I can't live with what's going
to happen here. They're preparing a
tactical warhead. Just big enough
to atomize this place and everything
around it.

HARRIER

But they don't even know what's down
there. Everyone could still be alive,
just unable to communicate.

MARCASE

There's only one way we're going to
find out. You have maps of the
building?

HARRIER

Yes.
(beat)
You want to go down inside?

MARCASE

I can't walk away from my friends.

31 INT. THE CHEMICAL WEAPON ROOM -- DAY 31

CU HAILEY'S FACE

Michael Hailey lies against a wall. Inside his bio-hazard
suit, half his face is covered with the thick, red substance.
The other half is clear. He is unconscious.
The red substance begins to bubble.

32 EXT. SURREAL DESERT - NIGHT 32

Twisted sounds The rumble of distant explosions.

Michael Hailey awakens. He's lying on his back in the middle
of a surreal desert. Not far away, is a blazing campfire.
But the color of the flames is strange and eerie.

A man is sitting at the fire. But his back is turned and he
is nothing more than a silhouette.

Instantly, Hailey is alert, he pulls out his Glock. The man
speaks. But still he doesn't turn.

MAN BY THE FIRE

So, you're awake.
(beat)
There's nothing to be afraid of,
Agent Hailey. Why are you afraid?

In combat stance, Hailey moves slowly toward the seated
figure.

it.

Hailey keeps it ready.

CU MAN'S FACE

There is a bullet hole in his forehead. Two more bullet
holes are in his chest...and his face is deathly pale.

MAN BY THE FIRE (CONT'D)

Two to the body and one to the head.
Isn't that the way it goes, Agent Hailey?

Hailey stares at him.

MAN BY THE FIRE (CONT'D)

We don't know each other. What are
you afraid of? You were simply a
professional, doing a job, following
orders.

HAILEY

This is a nightmare. You're an
hallucination.

MAN BY THE FIRE

I was just an assignment. We didn't
know each other.

The man stands up and walks toward him.

HAILEY

Stay back.

MAN BY THE FIRE

Why are you so afraid of me?
(beat)
We were in a restaurant. After you
shot me, a woman and a little girl
came running from the back screaming.
The man you were supposed to kill
had no family. You're haunted
by the fear that I was the wrong man,
aren't you, Agent Hailey?

CU HAILEY'S EYES

They're filled with pain. Hailey hears a gunshot and screams.

33 INT. CWD LEVEL ONE -- NIGHT 33

The outer door opens. Marcase and Harrier enter the main
level of the chemical weapons depot. They're carrying
flashlights.

MARCASE (O.S.)

Not your turn. Besides, who's gonna
direct the air strike if you're down
here?

CASSIAN

You really are a jerk, you know that?

Suddenly, a monitor near Cassian flashes on.

Where is it?

CASSIAN

Can't tell.

MARCASE

Somebody's got to be operating it.
Maybe it's Hailey.

Cassian touches some keys.

CASSIAN

gotta get to them.

CASSIAN

Whatever turned off the equipment,
could turn that camera back on.

Marcase and Harrier walk toward a steel door.

MARCASE

We're goin' down.

He tries the door. It's locked.

ANGLE ON FLOOR

The video unit creeps toward the door. It's covered with
the thick, blood-red liquid.

42 INT. CWD LEVEL ONE - CONTINUOUS 42

Suddenly, as Marcase and Harrier stare at the door. A faintly
glowing spot appears in the metal. Then, straight through
it rolls the crawler as though the steel had turned to liquid.

The glow disappears. The machine stops at their feet and
its lights turn off. The blood-red substance is bubbling
all over it.

43 INT. CWD LEVEL ONE -- NIGHT 43

A light shines down on the crawler. A military team of four
in hazmat suits is working to lift the blood-red mass and
place it in a plexiglas box that sits on a gurney. On the
side of the box are electronic controls. Two sets of gloved
arm extensions hang inside.

The team is using long steel rods with scooped ends to make
the transfer. Cassian, Marcase and Harrier are watching. A
team with a flame-thrower is standing by.

HARRIER

You think that box is going to hold
it? It moved straight through a steel door.

CASSIAN

It's the only way to get a test
sample. I'm sure as hell not taking
it out of the building.

MARCASE

I've got the feeling it could go out of the building anytime it wants.

CASSIAN

(to Marcase)
One of us has got to work in the
lab.

MARCASE

You do it. Remember, you've still
gotta guide that air strike.

CASSIAN

It's on hold. The cabinet is in
emergency session and there's no
agreement. Apparently, the EPA has
refused to give its approval to a
tactical nuclear strike. They want
an environmental impact study first.

MARCASE

You're joking.

arguing, no.

CASSIAN

Whatever it is, Edward, try not to
annoy it.

MARCASE

But annoying things is my specially.

Cassian walks out of the room. Harrier presses several
buttons on the controls. Blue-white light comes on in the
box.

HARRIER

Lets hope it doesn't mind getting a
physical.

Very gingerly, they stick their arms into the protective
sleeves.

44 EXT. DESERT NEAR CHEMICAL WEAPONS DEPOT -- NIGHT 44

B.B. Smickers stands a distance away looking at the lights
of the chemical weapons depot. He's still carrying his sign.

SMICKERS

(talking to himself)
Sometimes a man just has to take a
moral stand. He's gotta rise up
against the oppressor.

He drops the sign and begins walking toward the lights.

SMICKERS (CONT'D)

You just can't go and steal one of
God's stars and stick it away some
place. Not when the End is coming.
I gave’em a chance. I gave’em a
warning. But they wouldn't listen.
So, that's it. A prophet's gotta do
what a prophet's gotta do.
45 EXT. FENCE AT REAR OF CWD -- MOMENTS LATER 45

Smickers knows his way around. Quietly, he goes to the razor
wire fence at the rear of the building. He drops to the
ground as two young MP's walk past.

They wouldn't do that?

MP#2

Oh, yeah?

When they're gone, Smickers crawls through a small gully and
under the fence.

46 INT. CWD LEVEL ONE -- NIGHT 46

ANGLE ON BOX

Marcase and Harrier have their arms in the gloves. Sweat
covers their faces as they try to peel off some of the red
substance. Every time they touch it, it bubbles and oozes.

MARCASE

I'm not sure it likes that.

HARRIER

How do you know? Maybe bubbling and
oozing is a sign it's having fun.

MARCASE

You're right. I should be more open
to cultural diversity.

Suddenly ' a great deal more of the blood-like substance begins
flowing from the red mass. It streams down.

MARCASE
(CONT'D)
Okay, what does that mean, it's
ecstatically happy?

HARRIER

I wouldn't bet on it.

MARCASE

Okay, you got what you need?

CASSIAN (O.S.)

That'll do. Now, move away.

Marcase and Harrier step back from the box.

49 EXT. REAR OF CWD BUILDING -- LOADING DOCK - NIGHT 49

B.B.Smickers moves through the darkness to a loading dock at
the rear of the chemical weapons depot. The sliding steel
door that covers the entrance to the dock is open about two
inches at the bottom.

He tries to pull it up. It won't budge.

SMICKERS

Oh, Lord, you gave strength to Samson
after Delilah screwed him. And I
haven't cut my hair in a long time.
So, let's work together on this.

He pulls on the door with all his strength. It opens three
more inches, but it won't budge beyond that.

SMICKERS (CONT'D)

That doesn't look like enough to me,
but if you say so.

It's not really enough for him to crawl through, but he tries
anyway. He's stuck half in and half out when the M.P.'s
come around again.

SMICKERS
(CONT'D)
This is not good. Stuff like this

door in the darkness. When they're gone, he drags himself,
puffing and grunting on through.

50 INT. LOADING DOCK -- CONTINUOUS 50

Turning on a flashlight, Smickers moves through the dock to

building.

51 INT. REAR STAIRCASE -- CONTINUOUS 51

Quietly, Smickers makes his way down the stairs to the second
level.

52 INT. SECOND LEVEL ROOM -- CONTINUOUS 52

He enters the large storage room. He shines his flashlight
around, but sees nothing unusual.

53 INT. LAB VAN -- NIGHT 53

In the lab van, Cassian stares at a monitor.

CASSIAN

Amazing.

CU MONITOR

The monitor is filled with what appears to be a blood-red
universe. It's really a mass of sub-microscopic objects.

CASSIAN (CONT'D)

Marcase, Harrier?

MARCASE (O.S.)

We're standing by.

HARRIER

I don't recognize that. What is it?

CASSIAN (O.S.)

This is pure speculation, but I think
the liquid is actually billions and
billions of engineered objects.

The image focuses smaller. Microscopic objects come into
view. They look like bacteria, but there is something
metallic about them.

MARCASE

What do you mean?

CASSIAN

I think they're machines.

MARCASE

Like nano-technology?
55 INT. LAB VAN -- INTERCUT 55

CASSIAN

Yes, sub-microscopic computers, that
operate together. A kind of factory
that can restructure the molecules
of any object they enter. They could
turn a rock into a Cadillac.
Everything is made from the same
building blocks.

HARRIER

And if they entered your body?

CASSIAN

They might restructure your brain to
make you think and experience anything
their programs required.

You're right, Cassian. We should
get everybody out and blitz this
place.

CASSIAN

Maybe not such a good idea anymore.
What if they could take control of a
nuclear explosion at the moment of
blast?

MARCASE

Could that be possible?

CASSIAN

Whatever science created this is
capable of anything.

MARCASE

So, where could it have come from?

Harrier looks over at the box.

HARRIER

Hey...look.

They turn. Out of the box extends a large, blood-red hand
with eight fingers. It reaches straight up toward the sky.
Then, it sinks back down and disappears into the ooze.

CASSIAN (O.S.)

Maybe it was answering your question.

when you kill it, when you pour out

When you start killing stars, there's
no hope left.

As he walks, suddenly, he passes a door. Strange sounds
come from behind it. It's like unearthly singing.

He looks at the floor.

From under the door flows the thick, red substance.

For a moment, he stares ... listening to the voices.

CASSIAN

So, it dissolved into nothing.

MARCASE

You guys coming, or am I doing this
alone?

CASSIAN

We've got 29 minutes.

HARRIER

Plenty of time.

They join Marcase.

61 INT. LEVEL ONE STAIRCASE -- CONTINUOUS 61

The team makes its way down the stairs. They come to the
second level door and open it.

No. K1313 - "Apparition” - Shooting Script 10/24/96 42.

62 INT. SECOND LEVEL STORAGE ROOM - CONTINUOUS 62

Cautiously, they enter the large storage room where Hailey
and Shiroma were attacked.

CASSIAN

This is where we lost contact with
Hailey and Shiroma.

They shine their lights around the room. There is no red
substance anywhere.

But, as they approach the door at the opposite end, they
begin to hear the strange, unearthly singing.

ANGLE ON FLOOR

The blood-red ooze is seeping under the crack.

Carefully, Marcase pulls the door open. The team looks
in ... and their eyes grow wide.

CASSIAN (CONT'D)

My God...
63 INT. LONG HALL -- CONTINUOUS 63

Slowly, they enter a long hallway. A faint mist hangs above
the floor. The ceiling and walls are covered with the red
substance. And embedded in it are people.

Tuttle and Bubeck are there, as well as the three members of
the military hazmat team, and five other army personnel.

At the very end are Hailey and Shiroma. All of them look
dead. Marcase and Cassian examine their friends.

MARCASE

(examining Shiroma)
I think I feel a heartbeat.

CASSIAN

The same for Hailey. They're
unconscious. This stuff is actually
joined with their skin. There's no
way to break them free.

MARCASE

(speaking into the air)
Okay, we're down here. What do you want?

In front of them is a steel door covered with chemical warfare
warning symbols. With a crash it slides open.

HARRIER

That's where the chemical weapons are stored.

Marcase heads toward it. Cassian and Harrier follow.

64 INT. CHEMICAL WEAPONS ROOM -- CONTINUOUS 64

They stare into the chemical storage chamber.

In front of them is an amazing sight. Mist drifts above the
floor. The blood-red substance hangs everywhere.

Canisters of chemicals lie broken, their deadly contents
spilled. Lying in the center of them, covered with the red
ooze is B.B. Smickers. His eyes are open, but he is
unconscious.

MARCASE

That's the guy from the desert.
What's he doing here?

HARRIER

There's enough VX on the floor to
kill half the population of the world.

WHISPERING VOICE

We have rendered your chemical weapons
harmless.

MARCASE

Who are you?

WHISPERING VOICE

An ancient technology. We have been
drifting toward your planet for over
three hundred thousand years.

CASSIAN

Why are you killing these people?

WHISPERING VOICE

We are not programmed to kill. We
have only examined their minds

CASSIAN

Why?

WHISPERING VOICE

To learn about your world by seeing
the things you fear.

MARCASE

If you're a technology, that means
somebody created you? Who was it
and where did you come from?

The singing grows louder.

WHISPERING VOICE

Look down.

A pool of the red substance on the floor goes very dark.
It's almost like looking into the universe.

In it appears a red dot. It becomes larger and larger.

MARCASE

What is that?

CASSIAN

It looks like a planet. I think it's Mars.

WHISPERING VOICE

This technology is a probe. Recorded
in it is the final memory of a
civilization.

The image changes until they're looking down at the dusty
surface of the planet. They see the "pyramids' of Mars.

WHISPERING VOICE (CONT'D)

Space craft from your world have
viewed the rubble of our cities ...

The scan moves and holds on the strange mountainous 'face'
on the surface of the planet.

WHISPERING VOICE (CONT'D)

They have seen our pyramids and the
giant face that we built to look out
at the stars.

CASSIAN

What happened to all of it?

Lightning streaks across the image of the face. The image
fades away.

WHISPERING VOICE

In one night it was all destroyed.
(beat)
The Wise Ones knew that the end was
coming. And they knew that someday
your world would be like ours.

WHISPERING VOICE (CONT'D)

This technology was launched to bring
you a warning.

MARCASE

What was it that destroyed you?

WHISPERING VOICE

We are programmed to choose a
representative of your species.
Into him we have placed our memories
and the warning for your world. He
must speak the truth without fear.
We chose the only one who came to us
and was not afraid.

Smickers coughs and begins to awaken. Marcase turns and
stares at him.

MARCASE

You chose him?

WHISPERING VOICE

The mission of this technology is
accomplished.

The singing fades.

CU SMICKERS' FACE

The red substance starts to melt from Smickers' face.

CASSIAN (O.S.)

It's self-destructing.

Suddenly, the lights come on.

The team stares around. All of the blood-red substance is
gone.

HARRIER

This could all have been a shared
hallucination.

Smickers tries to stand up. He's disoriented. Marcase helps
him.

SMICKERS

I saw it. I saw the End. The stars
fell from the sky.

Marcase helps him out of the room. The others follow.

65 INT. LONG HALL -- CONTINUOUS 65

Here too the-red substance is gone. The people who were
trapped in it are beginning to regain consciousness.

Marcase bends over Shiroma and Hailey.

SHIROMA

What happened? I must have blacked
out.

MARCASE

It's okay, just take it easy.

HAILEY

What are you guys...doing down here?

Cassian is speaking into a radio.

CASSIAN

Dark Night One, Dark Night One.
This is Eclipse.. Code 16 Delta. Do
you read? Code 16 Delta.

RADIO TRANSMISSION

This is Dark Night One. 16 Delta
confirmed. Mission aborted.

Smickers walks over to Tuttle and Bubeck.

SMICKERS

A little suggestion. The next time
a prophet tells you not to touch a
star...LEAVE IT ALONE.

DISSOLVE TO:
66 INT. BOARDROOM OF THE DAWN -- NIGHT 66

Dr. Merick sits under a pool of light at the long table in
the conference room of the Dawn. In a chair, under another
pool of light, sits Major Kate Harrier. Merick is holding
the meteorite that Tuttle and Bubeck found. A slight smile
is on his face.

DR. MERICK

So, Major Harrier, am I to understand
that the great truth about the future
of this planet has been entrusted to
a schizophrenic desert rat named
B.B. Smickers?

HARRIER

Well, that's one interpretation.

DR. MERICK

And what is yours?

HARRIER

I think the red substance was some
kind of life form that caused a
collective hallucination. Perhaps a
microbe from another planet. But it
couldn't exist in our world and
finally died away.

DR. MERICK

(rather disdainfully)
And that is your “informed scientific
opinion?”

HARRIER

Well, scientists have found
microscopic fossils in meteorites.

DR. MERICK

Yes, of course they have. And where
is the "prophet," Mr. B.B. Smickers?

HARRIER

Oh, he ranted for awhile then wandered
off into the desert. He hasn't been
seen since.

DR. MERICK

Did he say anything unusual before
he left?

HARRIER

(uncomfortable)
Just the same kind of lunacy he was
spouting all along.

DR. MERICK

But surely he must have had some
words of wisdom for the human race?

HARRIER

Words of wisdom from a schizophrenic?
All he could do was rant about humans
and fear. He said we fear everything
except the one thing we should fear
the most.

DR. MERICK

And exactly what is that?

HARRIER

(after a pause)
Well, it was hard to tell from his
babbling, but I think he called it ...
(beat)
“the One who could make the stars to
fall.” He said, we fear everything...
but Him.

Merick stares at her for a moment. Then ...

DR. MERICK

Thank you ' Major Harrier. You're
dismissed.

She gets up and leaves the room. Merick stares at the
meteorite.

DR. MERICK (CONT'D)

The one who could make the stars to
fall. How very poetic.

He touches a button on the table.

DR. MERICK (CONT'D)

Memo. Begin a search for a derelict
in the California desert. His name
is B.B. Smickers.
(beat)
I want him found.

FADE OUT.
